Bettiah is the district headquarter of West Champaran (Pashchim Champaran) District under Tirhut Division of the state of Bihar, India. The name Champaran is believed to have been derived from the words "Champa" and "Aranya", meaning "The jungle of Champa".
Bettiah is the birth place of famous writer/poet Gopal Singh Nepali. Mahatma Gandhi started the Satyagrah Movement from Bettiah in 1919 when the surrounding region was being extensively used for Indigo plantation during British Raj.
