Dhanbad, Aug. 11: BIT-Sindri is set to become intellectually richer by 13 more faculty members, courtesy Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC), boosting the tech cradle’s prospects of bagging World Bank aid.
Yesterday, JPSC announced that 13 new teachers had been chosen for the state-run engineering college, which has been starved of faculty for some time now. With the new additions, the faculty strength will increase to 98, but still way of short of the required 195.
The appointment of new teachers will also brighten the chances of the institute qualifying for the World Bank-aided Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP), which can fetch the cradle Rs 12 crore for development.
BIT-Sindri has also promoted 12 existing teachers — seven assistant professors and five lecturers — to the rank of professors and assistant professors, respectively.
Giving details of the 13 new teachers, institute director S.K. Singh said six were lecturers, five assistant professors and two professors.
He said the appointment of five new lecturers in the IT department, which was established in 2001 with 40 seats but was without a permanent teacher so far, has come as a boon. Nine part-time lecturers had been taking classes, because of which the department lost out on recognition by the National Board of Accreditation.
“With the appointment of new teachers, the institute can also stake claim for selection in the second phase of TEQIP, which requires at least 50 per cent of the sanctioned strength of teachers to be in place,” Singh said.
According to Singh, BIT-Sindri may get Rs 12 crore for research and development if selected for the second phase of World Bank programme.
BIT-Sindri along with BIT-Mesra, Government Polytechnic Institute at Dumka and Government Polytechnic Institute at Ranchi, was selected for the first phase of TEQIP and received Rs 12.37 crore from the World Bank in 2006-07.
“As we have already applied for academic autonomy, the announcement of a new board of governors remains the only hurdle for qualifying for the second phase of TEQIP,” Singh said.
He added they had sent a list of members for the board of governors to the science and technology department earlier this year.
