BIT-Sindri is aiming to reach out to more and more students.

After successfully running 10 BTech and five MTech courses for several decades, the lone state-run engineering college is planning to launch several new programmes at both postgraduate and undergraduate level.

A proposal for launching four undergraduate courses in nanotechnology, environmental engineering, remote sensing and biotechnology, and MCA and MBA was presented before state science and technology secretary L. Khiangate during his visit to the institute on Tuesday.

Notably, last year, BIT-Sindri had submitted a detailed project report on the proposed MBA programme to the state science and technology department. It had sought sanction for fixing the number of teachers for the 60-seat course, but the department is yet to show the green light. Sanctioning of teaching posts is a prerequisite for getting accreditation from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

“These courses will help the institute explore new fields,” said head of the geology department Girijesh Kumar, who was present during Khiangate’s visit as director in charge of the institute. However, he added that the proposals were in a nascent stage.

“We also submitted a proposal for development of infrastructure like entrepreneur development cell, research and development cell, quality control cell, publication-patenting cell, industry-institute interaction cell, academic collaboration cell and training and placement cell. We also need a community hall, centralised instrumentation facility, 100 new faculty quarters, 200 staff quarters, three high-yielding borings and a guest house,” Kumar said.

The authorities further urged the secretary to upgrade the central library by equipping it with internet facilities. Two boys’ hostel and a girls’ hostel are also on the wish list. At present, more than 3,000 students are compelled to share rooms at the existing 17 hostels having the capacity to accommodate 2,100.

Regarding the other demands, Kumar, also the professor-in-charge of training and placement cell, said: “We pressed for appointment of teachers, which is a key issue.”

The engineering college is doing with just 98 teachers against the sanctioned strength of 195. As a result, it faces the risk of being disqualified for the second phase of World-Bank aided Technical Education Quality Improvement programme (TEQIP).

A technical institute must have at least 55 per cent of sanctioned strength of teachers to be eligible for TEQIP funds.

At present, BIT, Sindri, runs BTech course in 10 streams — mechanical engineering, production engineering, electrical engineering, metallurgy engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electronics-communication engineering, mining engineering, computer science engineering and information technology.

There are five courses — mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, metallurgical engineering, chemical engineering and civil engineering — at the MTech level.
