SINDRI: In a significant development, the state government has notified the constitution of the board of governors (BoG) for monitoring academic and administrative activities of BIT, Sindri, the only government engineering college of the state.

Institute director S K Singh said former Vinoba Bhave University (VBU) vice-chancellor has been made chairman of the BoG.

With institute director as member secretary, other members of the board are O P Jha of Jindal Power Ltd, B S Sahay, director, IIM-Raipur, state science and technology director and Ashok Kumar Kesri from IIT, Delhi.

R P Sharma, head of civil engineering department, and Om Prakash of chemical engineering department of BIT, Sindri, have been incorporated as institute representatives in the board.

Besides this, there will be one member each nominated by the UGC and VBU in the board and the board chairman will nominate three members of his choice for smooth functioning of the institute. The government decision has given the much needed respite to the institute administration which was waiting eagerly for the constitution of the BoG since long.

Constitution of the board is mandatory for granting academic autonomy to the institute for which the institute administration is striving hard. It is also one of the main conditions for getting the World Bank grant under Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP). The institute administration was granted time upto October 31 for fulfilling some of the conditions that included constitution of the BoG and filling the vacant posts of teachers.

The institute is expecting a grant of Rs 12.5 crore in TEQIP phase II, which the institute can still get, provided the state science and technology department pleads strongly for the institute. According to institute director, the UGC has also constituted a seven-member committee for granting academic autonomy to the institute. "The team, led by Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur, vice-chancellor is expected to visit Sindri in the last week of December," said the director.
