Ranchi, Oct. 21: The state science and technology department has approved the constitution of a board of governors for BIT-Sindri following up on a state government’s recommendation to grant autonomous status to the tech cradle.

The 10-member board to take key policy decisions and monitor their implementation will be chaired by Vinoba Bhave University’s former pro-vice chancellor M.P. Singh.

It also boasts names from some of the most reputed institutions of the country such as IIT-Delhi, IIM Raipur, among others.

University Grants Commission, Vinoba Bhave University and the state government’s science and technology director will nominate one member each. Singh, as chairman, is also empowered to appoint three additional members as special invitees. The director of BIT-Sindri will be the board’s member secretary.

The board’s tenure is of three years, but can be extended. It will also hold at least four meetings a year and apprise the state government of its decisions from time to time.

“Other roles and responsibilities of the board will be framed later,” science and technology minister Chandra Prakash Choudhary told The Telegraph.

“BIT-Sindri still happens to be the only state-run engineering college in Jharkhand. We are committed to revive its glorious past,” the minister commented.

BIT-Sindri is also a beneficiary of the “second phase technical education quality improvement programme” run by the Union human resources development ministry, which aims at “enhancing existing capabilities of institutions to become dynamic, demand-driven, quality conscious, efficient, forward looking and responsive to rapid economic and technological developments”.

Choudhary said noted academics from IITs and IIMs had been given place in the board of governors to promote an academic environment.
