It is a mission to spread literacy in their locality and students of BIT-Sindri are prepared to walk that extra mile to make a difference.
After setting up five study centres for slum children in the district, the last one being near Sindri check post, techies from BIT-Sindri have now turned their attention towards educating their parents, under the banner of Prayaas India.
Speaking to The Telegraph BTech (electronics and communication engineering) student Bhaiya Raunak Lal Kapoor said they had already initiated work in this regard with a survey having already been conducted by the volunteers among 60 Rodhabandh families.
The survey, he claimed, took into account the financial status and the number of educated members in a family.
“We have been facing difficulties in fixing a proper time. Most of the families targeted for the adult education programme are poor and work during the day to earn a livelihood. Such people can spare time only during the evenings,” Kapoor, who provides the web-support for Prayaas, said.
Prodded for more details, president of Prayaas Sitaram Rajak said that they were also mulling the setting up of a tailoring and sewing centre for residents of the slum areas of Sindri. He added that they had sought help from officials of the district administration in this regard.
“The basic aim of both the projects would be to make the slum-dwellers self dependent,” he said.
He added that the new centre that they had set up near Sindri check post around two months ago had already seen more than 100 poor children, between Classes I and VI, enrolling themselves. Classes for the children are being held in a temple campus from 4-6pm daily. Help from corporate houses, like Tata Steel has also been sought for both the projects, in which local youths would chip in as teachers.
If things go according to plan, the new project would be launched by the end of next month.
