Director Deshpande Sacrificed His Life for BIT Sindri
Posted By Dr Anil Singh
Gajendra Prasad Verma (1964 Metallurgy) wrote the following letter to his batch mates who were in attendance in the Grand Reunion in Bokaro on November 22, 2014 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of graduation from BIT Sindri. He was unable to attend due to his illness. In the letter he describes his brief meeting with the then Director Prof D L Deshpande only a few months before his untimely death in April 1961
Gajendra’s Letter dated 15 November 2014 is as below:
My dearest friends of BIT Sindri Alumni - 1964 Batch,
I may be pardoned for my absence. I am bed ridden in severe pain. However, my heart is always with you all. Our senior, Dr. S.K. Gupta taught, “Shivovyam”. We, all combined as a team, are ‘Shiva’ i.e. “God”.
I feel proud of sharing with you the introductory lecture of Shri D.L Deshpande on 25th July, 1960, “You are students of the second largest technical institute of our country”.
On Deepawali 1960, I was given the task to deliver the invitation card to the director. On his bungalow drawing room sofa he was looking on a big globe presented by American Prof. R.W. Atkinson. Prof Deshpande told me like a friend - “You know I have got cancer in my stomach. Doctor has advised me to take a few months leave for thorough treatment. During third five year plan B.I.T. Sindri is going to be an autonomous university. If I take leave we will be delayed by decades. “He sacrificed his life for B.I.T. Sindri”.
To quote Prof Deshpande- “You must be creative. Whatever job you are given you must create something great out of it.” Once he told his administrative officer - “You are part of my own.”
Because of his excellent human management skill we were taught by a galaxy of brilliant star professors of international reputation. We had excellent opportunities to develop skills in sports, athletics, music, drama, debates, student government, organizing, conducting and presenting technical papers and social services.
This resulted into our Alumni shining all around the world like brilliant stars. We excelled in industrial management and entrepreneurship, research and development, education, public administration, social services, sports, freelance writing, even in music and films.
There had been an era in “Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL)” when right from board of directors to various management levels were dominated by B.I.T. Sindri Alumni. To quote our senior Shri J. Mehra - “I find that most of the hard areas of our steel plants are run by B.I.T. Sindri Alumni. I don’t know if all of them leave what will happen to the plants.”
I may kindly be allowed to call “SAIL” as Sindri Authority of India Ltd.” Let us pray that Sindri Steel Plant materializes soon.
Lastly I wish you all the best.
“Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah.
Sarve Santu Niramayah.
Sarve Bhadrani Pashyantu.
Ma Kashchitdukh bhagbhavet.”
सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः सर्वे सन्तु निरामया। सर्वे भद्राणि पश्यन्तु मा कश्चित् दुःखभाग् भवेत्।।
(May all live happily. May all enjoy good health. May all see auspicious things. May none suffer sorrows.)
