(BJNS) SpiceJet is likely to start passenger flights from Darbhanga to Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore shortly. The central government has reportedly finalised SpiceJet's bid to start flights and the airline is expected to start operations in about six months time.
Darbhanga has a full-fledged air force base with a runway length of about 9000 ft. The flights are expected to start after the airport in Darbhanga is made fit for civilian operations including air traffic control tower and movement area for passengers.
In 1950s and 1960s, Darbhanga Raj had its own airlines. Darbhanga airport is currently being made operational for civilian flights under the Centre's UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme. UDAN scheme will make flying affordable for the masses with airfares being capped at Rs 2,500 per seat per hour.
